| I
started in music in 1972 when my friends Frank Egarr and Nigel Green
used to rehearse in the function room at the Horseshoe Pub on Bellhouse
Road in Sheffield. (see photo on Photos link). This was good grounding
for all of us however nothing much came of it because of a lack of funds.
I used to frequent the Idsworth Road WMC at this time and saw numerous
great club bands including The Daisies, Mainstream (with Johnny Calendar)
and Bitter Suite who all inspired me to join a band. In 1974 I met up with Nigel Green and some of his friends (Terry Hayward and Ted Fearnley) in the Crazy Daisy nightclub. From there we decided to form our own band (Magdelaine) and rehearse at the Bay Horse pub in Pitsmoor. This was a very popular band in Sheffield and a very happy time for me but unfortunately due to ill health I had to leave. In 1978 I again met up with Frank and we decided it was time to start up a new band called The Whiteman Brothers. By this time my brother John was old enough to join and be our drummer and we practiced in various pubs (do you see a pattern developing here) and we became quite well known even playing the famous Sheffield Fiesta nightclub. |
